Universal Messaging Framework

To put briefly, the aim is to make disparate messaging systems employ a standard data format, by using XML. Surely, Jabber server is used as the XML router, leaving only the design of suitable, cutomized jabber clients to implement.find more information on Jabber at Jabber.org and JabberCentral .

Controlling of remote, embedded devices using XML is what we plan to do first. The embedded device we are planing is a x86 hardware with Embedded GNU/Linux as the OS. As a start, an embedded Mp3/Ogg player is being tried. We plan to provide a suitable user interface to an existing mp3 player in linux (mpg123), make it a jabber client and listen to user requests. The only way to become a user is to be a valid jabber user subscribed to the player.

Mail Notification is the next goal. On arrival of mails, the user will be notified, if he's logged in jabber server. Also calling the user and reading mails over the telephone is implemented.

A suitable integration and documentation of all these is surely a challenging task, which will be addressed soon.
Meanwhile have a look at an introductory Jabber article at DeveloperWorks .
